David and Claire

Photos taken in Ludlow & during our Christmas visit to nearby Berrington Hall, which is one of many historic buildings preserved by the National Trust. These buildings used to be the great houses of aristocrats and wealthy industrialists whose every need was taken care of by huge teams of servants. Today, everyone can visit National Trust properties and experience life as a Queen/King for a day.

The only thing missing is the servants, which means that these days we get to spend Christmas at home with our families!

However, do not fear! Servants will be back in time for Summer School 2022.

Day 22 – Thursday, 1 August 2019 – Harry P. & the Horses

As week three comes to a close, we say goodbye to some of our students, but also welcome some new ones.

Departures

No doubt we’re all sad to have to wave goodbye, but at the same time, we can’t help it but be delighted to see how many friends students have made in only a couple of weeks. Friends might fly away home to the other side of the world – yet that won’t mean an end to their companionship. Our returning students regularly tell us about how they keep in touch with friends they met here – even if it was years ago!

The deeper the sorrow, the sweeter the joy
Have a safe flight home!

Arrivals

A fresh week also means that some new students join our team. We wish them a great stay here and plenty of learning English!

For other students, Thursday is a more relaxed day when they can recharge and get ready for another week of learning to use their English in new ways.

A nice walk to Ludlow

Some chose to visit Ludlow, the quintessential English town, just 5 minutes’ drive from the campus. Ludlow Castle was built by the Norman (French) invasion force led by William the Conqueror that conquered England in 1066.

The stunning walk to Ludlow is 20 minutes through fields and forest

The secrets of Harry Potter

Lovers of this book and movie franchise got an opportunity to step behind the scenes and learn more about their favourite characters. They even saw authentic props and rooms that the movies were filmed in!

Study like Granger, eat like Weasley, live like Potter!

Horses aren’t just beautiful to look at

Horse riding is a perfect way to truly and completely connect with nature. Under the careful eye of a professional guide, students went on a ride through the forest.

What students really loved was the fact that the ride was not in paddock, not on a road: our trek was through forest tracks deep in the forest. A real adventure!

See for yourself what horse riding is like

Ready for another great week? Let’s do it!

Day 27 – Friday 3 August

Murder Mystery

Today ended with a murder. David, the co-director of the summer school was found lying lifeless in the main reception at around 1930.

Relentless

Luckily, an international team of trainee student investigators were on hand to solve this terrible crime. They listened to all the alibis. They considered all the motives. They examined all the clues. They interviewed all the suspects. They found out ‘who dunnit’ – they found the guilty one.

If you weren’t there, take a look at the suspects (above and below). Who do you think the guilty one was?

Some of the suspects.

Last English lessons

Today was the last day of lessons on summer school and the last opportunity to take photos with classmates and teachers.

Get Ahead ‘came to a head’

Come to a head = if something comes to a head, you cannot delay it anymore: you must deal with it now.

Example:

"Finally the problem of plastic waste in the sea has come to to a head. The government must deal with this problem now."
Leadership

Get Ahead Business students started a new company this week called Bright Knight, which is an especially good name for a business based in a medieval town!

As well as studying the basics of business, these Get Ahead Business students had to create a company identity, create a product, and create a financial plan. However, that was not the difficult part. The most challenging part of running a business is creating a team and a company culture.

In the course of planning, purchasing raw ingredients and creating their product, these young entrepreneurs discovered the challenges of learning to work together efficiently.

Starting the company

Success! Sales went well

So what was the result?

The result was a healthy profit with high demand for their smoothies. Displaying the ethical underpinning (foundation) of their business, the team then donated all of the profit to a local charity.

However, that was not the only reward. The customers loved the product, including teacher Lucy:

Lucy approves of the business students’ mocktails.

Get Ahead Performing Arts –  Film Making

Filming came to a head today on the Get Ahead film project. Students worked together brilliantly to get in all the final shots. The premiere will be tomorrow night.

Trip to Ludlow

Students enjoyed an afternoon trip to Ludlow.

The castle was built by French invaders in 1086. As the students discovered, the best view is from the tower.

Sunset

The day finished with a dramatic sunset. What a beautiful place!

Hello parents who are in Ludlow today – this is for you!

Parents!

If you are travelling to Ludlow today, and if you like beautiful gardens, we highly recommend this event in the centre of Ludlow.

Ludlow is a medieval town surrounded by a city wall. Inside the old town there are lots of beautiful secret gardens.

Usually you can’t see them, but today… you can!

Open Garden Day in Ludlow

Meet the locals

This is a great opportunity for you to meet local people in Ludlow. The town is famous with British tourists, but not with international tourists. That is why you can expect a very warm welcome: people will be very interested to meet you over a cup of tea (with milk)… and “pass the time of day” (have a chat).

Tickets

You can buy tickets from Rickard’s Castle Bookshop in the central square near the castle.

Stanton, the owner of the bookshop is a friend of More Than English director David Meddows, and he’s very friendly. He’ll be pleased to help you!

Ludlow Castle

Great weather meant a lovely walk to Ludlow this morning across the fields and woods.

In 1066 the French led by William the Conqueror invaded England. To control the new territory the French built a network of castles  including Ludlow Castle in 1086.

Here we all are taking in the view at the top of the tower.

Did you know that King Henry VIII's wife Catherine Aragon was locked up in Ludlow Castle?
